Ayurveda as a Medicine for Diabetes

Given the hectic work schedule coupled with stress, anxiety and bad lifestyle choices, Diabetes has become a household disease in today’s world. People of all age brackets are falling prey to it. In India, diabetes is increasing at such a fast pace that alarm bells have started ringing. According to the International Diabetes Federation reports, 2017, India had about 72 million cases of diabetes and is also one amongst the top three nations fighting the disease. With an aware generation, people are now looking at Ayurveda to combat the disease which substitutes synthetic drugs that is used on Allopathic medicines.

Diabetes also known as Madumeha, is divided into four categories. According to Ayurveda, it is segregated in 4 major types (and total 21 types)

  • Kapha type (10 types)
  • Pitta type (6 types)
  • Vata type (4 types)
  • Diabetes in children

In fact, Ayurveda does not regard Diabetes as a disease that can be treated by mere medicine or just by following a dietary regimen. By merely regulating sugar levels, diabetes cannot be cured and hence, it is classified as a Maharog which when failed to diagnose on time can further lead to severe failing health conditions like eye problems, joint pains, impotency, kidney failure, sexual and urologic problems etc.

The big question is whether Ayurveda can really cure diabetes? How safe is it to rely on alternate medicines?

The reason why Ayurveda is a safe option is because the treatment recommended in Ayurveda – as against modern medicine – is aimed at rejuvenating the body to not only balance sugar levels, but also to ensure that no further complication is caused. The good thing is Ayurveda aids in recovering from diabetes with its own management system. One needs to be aware and implement

  • Understanding the root cause of the disease is the first action step in this system. The added fact that these Ayurvedic medicines have no side effects stands as a big positive that relieves the stress of any complication arising out of it.
  • Ayurveda states that diabetes is caused due to the decrease in the Agni element that leads to an imbalance of blood sugar levels. This imbalance is handled by inculcating right health management practices and additional supplements prescribed by a knowledgeable Ayurveda practitioner. Breathing techniques like Agnisar Kriya and Suryabedha pranayama leverage the creation of the Agni.

Since Ayurveda considers diabetes mainly as an excess of Kapha dosha, it recommends a Kapha-pacifying diet to keep it under control. An Ayurveda dietary prescription takes many factors into account, such as age, body constitution, season, and other environmental and social factors. The Ayurvedic perspective on balancing Kapha is consistent with Western medicine’s current understanding of the proper diet for diabetes, which recommends minimizing simple carbohydrates, fats, and other heavy foods while increasing “lighter” foods such as beans (as the main protein source), whole grains, and lighter fruits and vegetables. Both Ayurveda and modern medicine recognize a lack of physical exercise as one of the lifestyle factors that contributes and progression of diabetes.
